Vers 1
Hedvinden söker genom torrmurens glipor
spovar ropar som förlorade ting
Jag lagar muren i första ljuset
stenar passar som välkända knogar
mossa och gammal frost i fogarna
samma som året då floden tog nedre fältet
Vers 2
Fåren prövar mitt arbete med sin tyngd
knuffar tills de hittar en svaghet
Jag bygger om, långsamt och säkert
vet att vädret får sin vilja fram
dalgångarna ber om tålamod
inte fulländning
Vers 3
Hustruns grav ser ut över fältet
hennes sten står fast mot kulingarna
Jag berättar för henne om den svaga punkten
tredje stenraden från slutet
hon lyssnar i vindens suck
murar håller landet samman
håller minnena inne
Vers 4
Regnet nålar kalkstenen rå
Jag spänner ryggen mot byn
stenraderna bär årens tyngd
kroppen böjd men linjen sann
muren vittrar med mig
vi lutar tillsammans
Vers 5
Skymningen mjukar upp Swaledales kullar
gör stenarna till grå väktare
Jag packar verktygen, hunden vid hälen
arbetet slutar vid grinden
stannar kvar i händernas värk
Vers 6
Dessa murar ska ge vika med tiden
som all sten och allt ben måste göra
Jag lagar dem så länge händerna kan
lämnar min egen linje i markens skorpa
Värken stannar i mina handflator.

Originaltext

Verse 1
Fell wind searches the drystone gaps
curlews cry like lost things
I mend the wall at first light
stones fit like familiar knuckles
moss and old frost in the joints
same as the year the flood took the lower field
Verse 2
Sheep test my work with their weight
nudge till they find a weakness
I rebuild, slow and sure
knowing the weather will have its way
the dales ask for patience
not perfection
Verse 3
Missus’s grave looks over the field
her stone solid against the gales
I tell her about the weak point
third course from the end
she listens in the wind’s sigh
walls hold the land together
hold the memories in
Verse 4
Rain needles the limestone raw
I brace my back to the squall
courses hold the years’ weight
body bent but the line true
the wall weathers with me
we lean together
Verse 5
Twilight softens the Swaledale hills
turns the stones to grey sentinels
I pack my tools, dog at heel
labour ends at the gate
lingers in the ache of the hands
Verse 6
These walls will fail in time
as all stone and bone must do
I’ll patch them while these hands can
leave my own line in the land’s crust
The ache stays in my palms.
