Lundberg Selection

Lundberg Selection is Björn Lundberg’s multilingual songwriting and studio project. The songs are developed in more than twenty languages and often begin with a person, a place or a concrete action.

The starting point is the feeling that should remain after the song has fallen silent.

Instruments, rhythm, vocal character and timbre are chosen to carry that feeling. Genre terms are used later for orientation, while the story leads the artistic work.

Feeling before genre

Each song first receives an emotional direction. It may be intimate and restrained, physically rhythmic, warm but restless, or carry a quiet resistance.

Its world is then defined: a person, a place, a moment and a few concrete actions. The setting gives the feeling a physical form and keeps it from becoming abstract.

Genre is used to describe the result. It guides listeners and music services, while the song itself is shaped by the needs of the story.

Voice, instruments and movement

Once the world and feeling of the lyric are clear, the song’s musical language is decided.

The voice is treated as a character. Age, proximity, strength, vulnerability, pronunciation and the way a phrase is carried all affect how the story is perceived.

Instruments are chosen for their function in the scene. A plucked string instrument may create movement, a woody bass give the body a steady direction, and a sparse wind instrument open a distance around the voice. Pulse, pauses and dynamics are shaped in the same way.

The production brief therefore describes an overall feeling rather than a ready-made genre template: how the voice should meet the listener, how the music should move and what should linger afterwards.

Hà Nội – Bà cụ bán phở phố cổ

In the Hanoi track Hà Nội – Bà cụ bán phở phố cổ, the aim is larger than making “Vietnamese folk pop”. The song must carry the weariness of dawn, the heat of the broth, the woman’s dry humour and the endurance of opening the same door at half past four every morning.

Vocal character, instruments and rhythm are chosen for this composite feeling. Vietnamese timbres anchor the place, while the intimacy of the performance makes the woman present. The genre description comes later and captures only part of the result.
